Word Up! (Thesis Concept No. 2)

About Word Up!
Taking what I’ve learned from Chalk Walk along with some of the suggestions given to me by classmates and professors, I’d like to present to you Word Up!. Inspired by board games like Scrabble, Word Up! is a game that involves spelling words while ascending stairs. Players accumulate points by moving from one letter to the other as they make their way up the steps. Once they reach the top of the steps, a score is calculated and is compared to the day’s top score. Players can also continue building words if they decide to ascend more steps. This is also known as building a Word Chain, which also has its own set of scores displayed on the Word Up! display on each floor.

Sam just arrived to work and is waiting to take the elevator to the 4th floor.

He glances at the stairwell and notices a digital sign overhead.

It seems to be some sort of spelling competition.

Out of curiosity, Sam heads over to the stairwell.

Sam notices that there are segmented squares on each step facing him.

He looks down and notices a giant start button. He decides to step on it.

All of a sudden, the segmented boxes display random letters. Sam assumes that he has to spell a word.

On his first try, he builds the word - PATROLS. Letters that come before or after a correctly spelled word are ignored by the system.

Sam looks up at the digital sign over the doorway on the 2nd floor and notices that he just achieved the day's top score.

Sam is super excited!

Amped up, Sam takes on the next 2 levels. The points and words that he generates during those levels will also be calculated in the Word Chain category.

Afterthoughts

• The number of letters displayed in the storyboard might be a bit much. I could imagine people spending way too much time in the stairwell trying to figure out how to beat the top score.
